Personal Response Essay A personal response essay critically analyzes a text by providing real-world connections in its interpretation of meaning. For example, we determined that the ship in O Captain! My Captain! by Walt Whitman symbolized America coming out of the storm of the Civil War, moving safely into the home port where it considered its damages much as the country considered its internal damages - loss of life, loss of President Abraham Lincoln, continued political warfare between the North and South. This could be compared to our current government and America once again a ship at sea tossing around in the storm between Democrat and Republican politicians adding to a polarized American society. For this essay, you will analyze The Crucible by Arthur Miller by comparing the characters, conflicts, and/or themes of the play to some aspect of the United States and the American Dream. A crucible is defined as a severe test. Write an essay discussing the significance of the title. What is "the crucible" within the play and how does it bring about change or reveal an individual's true character? In what ways is the American Dream a crucible? How has America failed to pass this test?
