Studio Time Goals From here to the end of the trimester, you will dedicate a significant amount of your Tuesdays to Studio Time. More specifically, toward the creation of your Map. You will be graded on your use of this studio time via the Habits of Professionalism - Self-Discipline standard. At the start of each studio time, please complete the first set of questions on the goal template:
Two Paths | Enter Studio Time Goal 1 IF you have not finished The Alchemist, please embark on silent reading and finish the novel as soon as possible. IF you have finished The Alchemist, today marks the first day of your project journey. Begin by reviewing the directions for the Hero's Journey Map. Then begin mind mapping your map. Hero's Journey Map Directions Construct a visual map of Santiago’s journey in The Alchemist. This map should articulate - in images and words - Santiago’s experiences within the stages of the Hero’s Journey, interactions with the three world religions, and realization of his personal journey. This map may be metaphorical or literal; however, it must include symbols + images (reading standards), direct quotes + analysis (writing standards) that combine to suggest some greater world meaning (thinking standards). While the symbols and images are important, it will be impossible to pass this project without the direct quotes and analysis since these specifically represent the writing standards needed to obtain English credit in this course. Components 12 Stages of the Hero’s Journey: Identify the 12 stages of Santiago’s journey by examining important points in the plot. Your map should include references to the plot as well as a detailed explanation of how Santiago changes as a character within each stage - confidence, capability, faith in his journey (personal legend).
3 Major Religions: Identify elements of the three major world religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Explain interactions Santiago has with each religion in the novel.
1 Personal Legend: Detail Santiago’s personal legend and how his journey lead him to the satisfaction of this legend. Synthesis what you believe readers should learn from Santiago and his journey.

Writing Workshop What are the components of a successful analysis essay? Essay Task Write a unified, coherent essay about the human component of Santiago’s personal journey. In your essay, be sure to:
The Hero’s Journey While Joseph Campbell’s definition of the Hero’s Journey includes twelve defined stages, the truth is that the journey is non-linear; it twists, repeats, and presents the hero with numerous obstacles that test their character and capacity. This is evident in Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist through Santiago’s quest to find the treasures of the pyramids and fulfill his personal legend. Select one prompt from below to explore in a written essay due at the end of the hour. During this time, you may only have your essay, writing utensil, writing prompt with mind map and book on your desk. Read and carefully consider these perspectives. Each suggests a particular way of thinking about Santiago’s journey based on evidence from the text.
