Quick Jot
This past year we have read three major pieces of literature that have raised questions about morals and ethics by considering the worst of humanity; however, despite many of the characters in these literary works diving deep into moral depravity, we are capable as humans of putting ourselves in their shoes. In doing so, we consider how these characters' stories, struggles, failures and redemptions might change our own ideas of morals and ethics. Khaled Hosseini wrote in The Kite Runner, "there is a way to be good again”. Quick jot the societal and individual moral and ethics considered through the literary works A Small Place, Antigone and The Kite Runner as well as any topics we have studied within the Social Studies discipline: Can the characters and events in these novels teach us to be good again? We will discuss our ideas during tomorrow's class in the form of a Socratic Seminar. Studio Time | Projects for Dan are presented next week!

It isn’t up to the painter to define the symbols. Otherwise it would be better if he wrote them out in so many words. The public who look at the picture must interpret the symbols as they understand them ~ Pablo Picasso Connections | See, Think, Wonder

Your final project for Antigone will be two-fold—a visual and a written piece that conveys your ideas about civic duty or civil disobedience. Begin your entry by choosing a theme topic. This topic could be, but is not limited to:
Theme is the overarching subject or topic the reader recognizes or gains from a story. By understanding this subject or topic, we are able to recognize truths about what it means to be human and to be part of society. This idea or truth helps us to understand ourselves as human beings who are connected to all human beings in the world, across all spaces, cultures and across all time. The theme is the important thing for us to learn about others, but especially about ourselves. An analysis essay examines the components of a text, the literary elements, in order to construct an argument about this theme. So for this one-page essay, you will consider your ideas about civic duty or civil disobedience by using the text(s) we studied in class this unit. Analysis | Quick Jot Patriotism: Today you will work with a partner to continue thinking about Tuesday's discussion of patriotism. You will form connections between the quagmire of Vietnam with that of Antigone. Begin by reconsidering your definition of patriotism (remember you and your partner may not have been in the same group on Tuesday so your definitions may be slightly different). Next discuss and respond to the prompts comparing Creon and Antigone's patriotism:
