Bookmarks Today we will begin the reading process. The first reading task are the assigned chapters listed below (roughly 20 pages each). For each set of reading assigned, you will complete a bookmark. These bookmarks can be found on the bookshelf in the white slidder bin if you desire to read ahead in the novel (which is always encouraged!). We are going to spend some time reading in class today; HOWEVER, this will not be the norm. You are EXPECTED to read for at least 20 minutes every night as home learning. Characterization: Characterization is the analysis of characters in a novel. We analyze characters to understand humans, to understand ourselves. There are numerous ways to analyze characters. Each group will consider one of these ways. First, create a visual symbol that represents this type of characterization. Second, make a statement about why we study this component of characterization. What does it help us understand about the character? Select one representative of your group to record the symbol and statement on the Characterization sheet. Select one representative to verbally explain your symbol and statement to the rest of class.

Pick up your binder. Add the Novel Study Survey handout to the T1: Past Perspectives section of your binder. Novel Study For the first unit in Social Perspectives, you will join a group of your fellow students to investigate, analyze a novel and decade in American history. Today we will watch four videos that consider important aspects of the novels and decades you have to choose from. While watching the video, please respond to the questions on the handout in note-taking format (this means you do not need to write in complete sentence, just need to be able to recall import thoughts, ideas you had while watching the video). We will discuss your responses and questions at the end of each video as a group.

Please set the room up in pods. No more than four students in a pod. Please do not sit on the short end of the tables - two social geographers per table the long way. Silently read course overview.... Perspective is our individual understanding or interpretation of the world around us. It is our own particular attitude about the people we meet, the places we visit, the technologies we experience, the ideas we develop. While our perspective dictates how we see the world, the world also helps dictate our perspective. This class is devoted to studying various perspectives throughout time and place in order to better understand our own. See Think Wonder As a class of social geographers, we will complete a See Think Wonder on the ELMO to demonstrate a quality thinking routine. Then each pod will complete an additional See Think Wonder. This See Think Wonder will initially be conducted silently. When indicated to do so, please writing your sees, thoughts, and wonders down on the canvas. Each social geographer should have several sees, several various thoughts, and several different questions.
Different Perspectives After the group discussion, elect someone in your group to tape your canvas on the front whiteboard. Gallery Walk

Two Truths and a Lie: Record two truths you would be willing to share with the world via Facebook. Create one lie that might enhance your image on Facebook in a way you would like it enhanced. For example, I might write in my Facebook post that I love climbing Mt. Fiji this time of year when the cherry blossoms are in bloom!!!. Why is that a lie? I have never been to Japan, never climbed Mt. Fiji and don't actually know if the cherry blossoms are blooming right now, but I like thinking some day I could be that person on Facebook having crazy, cool adventures like climbing Mt. Fiji and visiting Japan when the cherry blossoms are blooming. Discussions: At Étude High, we participate in gatherings like Two Truths and a Lie all of the time, but today I threw in the Facebook component. How might social media like Facebook alter our ability to lie? Quick Jot
