I Remember....Childhood
Writing Workshop It is a summer day. You have climbed to the top of a tree in your backyard. You are now too scared to come down. You start screaming for your big brother. Can you picture, feel the emotions of this event? Probably not. Descriptive Writing
Studio Time Step 1: review the notes from your interview, maybe even re-listen to the inter view if you taped it Step 2: step into the view point of your interviewee, based on the information provided in the interview infer the following:
I Remember…..Baraboo I remember the cling, cling, cling of the Circus Trolley as it shouted the history of the Ringling Bros; the ghost of Grandma Ringling passing by an upstairs window of the peeling yellow-painted mansion. I remember the sting of sun-kissed skin after hours of bathing in chlorine; the euphoric pride that comes after pushing your muscles to their limits while swimming your team to victory. I remember the roar of the engine, the quickening of the heart, the flipping of the stomach as the boat churned through the waves of the Wisconsin River; the tightened muscles and bruised ribs from bouncing in a water tube. I remember the chorus of shouting voices during a kickball tournament in “the field,” boys against girls, sisters against sisters, neighbors against neighbors; a community of skinned knees and muddy cheeks fighting to rule the block if only for a weekend. I remember the tears and the stabs in the chests when those voices faded, sisters laid to rest; the smile of knowing they are organizing kickball tournaments somewhere else now. I remember a place with rolling cornfields, majestic green bluffs, glassy waters; a "no place like home" type of place. Exit Slip | What is the perspective of your poem?
